UFC: ISRAEL ADESANYA DEFEATS WHITTAKER TO RETAIN MIDDLEWEIGHT WRIGHT TITLE

13 Feb 2022

After defeating Robert Whittaker in a highly anticipated rematch of their 2019 middleweight title fight by unanimous decision on the judges scorecard in the main event of UFC 271 at the Toyota Centre in Houston, USA, Israel Adesanya remains the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight title holder.

The three judges scored the fight  48-47, 48-47 and 49-46 in favour of Adesanya.

The Nigerian-born New Zealander is undefeated in the middleweight division, with a perfect record of 22 straight wins and has remained a champion for over two years.

In 2019, Adesanya defeated Whittaker to win the Middleweight title, and he hasn’t lost it since.

Adesanya said he rated his own performance as a “seven out of 10.”

“Not bad,” he said. “Good night in the office. Good chess match.”

He stated that the victory was the most important thing. Afterward, Whittaker stated that he believes he “did enough” to win. That notion was shot down by Adesanya.

“He did not win that fight, and he knows it,” Adesanya said. “He needs to go have a shower as well and reflect and realize that’s not true. … You don’t do ‘enough’ to win the title. You take the belt. That’s how this works.”

According to UFC Stats, Adesanya outlanded Whittaker 79-59 in important strikes. Whittaker, however, landed more important head punches, 38-36, while Adesanya outlanded Whittaker in leg strikes, 29-13. Whittaker landed four takedowns, matching Marvin Vettori for the most by any opponent against Adesanya in the UFC.
