Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke’s inspiring feat highlights the limitless potential of individuals with autism.

Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke, a 15-year-old autistic artist from Nigeria, has officially set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) for the largest painting on canvas by an individual. His masterpiece, spanning an astounding 12,303 square meters, was unveiled at Eagle Square in Abuja on April 2, coinciding with World Autism Awareness Day.

The grand event, attended by dignitaries, art enthusiasts, and advocates for autism inclusion, also featured the official presentation of the Guinness World Record certificate. Speaking at the ceremony, Kanyeyachukwu’s father expressed pride in his son’s remarkable achievement, emphasizing that his determination overcame early skepticism. “Many thought Kanyeyachukwu’s goal was impossible, but he has proven otherwise,” he said. “This is a celebration of the immense talent of autistic individuals worldwide.”

Hannatu Musawa, Nigeria’s Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, lauded the young artist’s success, calling it a significant milestone not only for him but for the entire nation. “We are not just witnessing a world record being broken, but also the triumph of perseverance, passion, and the indomitable spirit of youth,” she remarked. “Kanyeyachukwu’s artwork, titled Impossible is a Myth, serves as a powerful symbol of hope and inspiration for the autism community and beyond.”

Cristian Munduate, UNICEF Nigeria’s representative, also commended Kanyeyachukwu’s extraordinary accomplishment, stating, “Kanye’s success reaffirms that every individual, regardless of ability, possesses boundless potential. Societies must embrace diversity and foster opportunities for all.”

Born in November 2009, Kanyeyachukwu has gained recognition as a talented creative artist, with his works displayed in prestigious galleries and museums across Nigeria, Europe, and Africa. In 2018, his paintings were showcased at the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) in Vienna, alongside three other notable Nigerian artists.

Kanyeyachukwu’s record-breaking painting, completed in November 2024, shattered the previous record of 9,652 square meters, set by an artist in Qatar. His achievement not only places him in the global spotlight but also reinforces the importance of nurturing artistic talent in individuals with autism, proving that with the right support, they can excel in their chosen fields.
