Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan versus Senate President: Unraveling the Plot

10 Mar 2025

Hi Folks,

It has been a while, and much has happened. I’ve been caught up chasing daily bread and lost in the wilderness of life.

Recently, I got into a debate about voting out President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The usual contenders—Kwankwaso, Atiku, Obi, and others—don’t seem promising to me. Perhaps, with fresh faces, there might be a chance. The discussion ended with the question of Tinubu’s achievements as Lagos State governor since Atiku never had the opportunity to govern a state.

On a solemn note, the nation mourns the passing of a great politician, Dr. Doyin Okupe. May his soul rest in peace.

Meanwhile, political tensions continue in Rivers State, and the controversy surrounding Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio has further divided Nigerians. The situation has escalated, with foreign media misrepresenting her recent suspension as being linked to sexual harassment allegations.

To clarify:
On February 20, 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan clashed with the Senate President over her seat reassignment. While other Senators had also been reassigned, she refused to move and disrupted proceedings. The Senate referred the matter to the Ethics Committee.

Then, on February 28, she appeared on Arise TV, alleging that Akpabio had sexually harassed her in December 2023. This revelation changed the conversation, drawing public sympathy and overshadowing the original dispute.

The Ethics Committee invited her to defend her conduct, but she sought a court injunction to halt the proceedings. However, on March 5, she attended plenary to submit a petition against Akpabio—ironically to the same committee she refused to face. The committee, unable to proceed without her, recommended a six-month suspension, which was unanimously approved by the Senate.

Public outrage has since shifted the focus from her conduct to the sexual harassment claim. Whether true or not, her suspension was based on her February 20 actions, not the later allegations.
