Nigeria: New Day New Drama

30 May 2022

Hi Folks,

These are indeed exciting or should I say interesting times in Nigeria. As the country gears up for the 2023 General Elections, the number of drama has been on the increase.

Saturday, the main opposition party had her presidential primaries and boy! Was it interesting? Yeah, it was. The events that led to the primaries and the different addresses to the delegates was worth the talking that followed.

First, it was permutations and theories from social media and political analysts. Before Peter Obi left the party, social media pundits were almost sure the party would field a Peter Obi somehow; a good number of social media folks insisted it was the turn of the South East to produce a president and so, former Governor Peter Obi who is known for his modesty and frugality was the ideal candidate; the rest is history.

The more accurate predictions had it that the ticket was to go to Atiku and to Atiku it went. That lots of dollars exchanged hands before and during the primaries were never contested.

The tragedy that happened in Port Harcourt where over 30 people, including children lost their lives in a stampede in a free food distribution event is too tragic to highlight.

Now, all eyes are on the ruling party (APC) as they prepare for their presidential primaries this week. Previous primaries, governorship, House of representative etc. have their stories but I’ll rather focus on the future, if you know what I mean (sic).

Social media is agog with thoughts on who the flag bearer of the APC will be, with names like the national leader of the APC; Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the incumbent vice president of Nigeria; Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, past President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Kayode Fayemi, former governor Rotimi Amaechi and a bunch of others totalling 23 or so; one can only hope the APC conduct themselves in the right manner.

Many believe Prof. Yemi Osinbajo and Pres. Goodluck Jonathan may enjoy a bit of government support but with the numbers and caliber of contestants, once can only take that with a pinch of salt.

As lovers of Nigeria we want the best candidate to emerge but it would do some good to amuse ourselves with some permutations ahead of the primaries.

So who do you see emerging as the APC presidential flagbearer at the end of this week’s primaries?

Remember to make someone smile today with your acts of kindness.

Yours,

Ilupeju B
