Kicking Off 2025 with Culture and Cinema

4 Jan 2025

Hi Folks,

Welcome to 2025! The holiday season was a whirlwind of fun, family, and cultural discovery.

While the family embarked on a journey across Nigeria’s southwestern states—visiting the historical charm of Ibadan, the iconic Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, and the therapeutic Ikogosi Warm Springs—I indulged in a different kind of adventure: the world of cinema and streaming.

The airwaves were buzzing with Nollywood highlights and theater events. Although I missed Edgar Joseph’s stage plays (which remain on my must-watch list), I dove headfirst into some Netflix gems and joined a couple of lively gatherings.

One standout for me this season was Femi Adebayo’s Seven Doors. This series, which premiered on Netflix in December 2024, delivered an unforgettable holiday experience, and here’s why I think you should add it to your watchlist:

A Journey Through History and Culture

Set in 18th and 19th-century Nigeria, Seven Doors takes viewers on a historical journey through themes of love, betrayal, and power. Femi Adebayo stars as a Yoruba monarch married to an Igbo queen, offering a beautiful fusion of two rich cultures.

The series masterfully brings Yoruba and Igbo traditions to life. From the vibrant fashion of the era to the political intrigues of power and betrayal, the storytelling is both immersive and educational.

Exceptional Production Quality

The production team employed hyperbolism to emphasize the dramatic climaxes, making the narrative even more gripping. The subtle exploration of Yoruba spirituality and the existence of spirit beings added depth, making the story resonate with audiences on multiple levels.

A Subtle Commentary on Corruption

Without preaching, Seven Doors delivers a strong message about the dangers of greed and corruption. The tragedy that befalls Ìlara town is a poignant reminder of the consequences of unchecked power, and the triumph of truth in the end leaves viewers with a sense of justice.

Spectacular Makeup and Effects

Hakeem Effect’s artistry deserves special mention. From the realistic portrayal of accident victims to the captivating visuals of Kabiyesi attempting to cheat death, the makeup and special effects were nothing short of mesmerizing. Esusu’s look alone was a masterclass in creative excellence.

A Stellar Cast and Crew

The entire team behind Seven Doors brought their A-game. Every performance, every scene, and every detail contributed to making this series a masterpiece.

So, if you’re looking for a culturally rich, visually stunning, and emotionally engaging series, Seven Doors is a must-watch. Let me know what you think when you see it!

Here’s to a fantastic 2025 filled with stories that inspire, challenge, and entertain.

Yours,

Ilupeju B
