2023: The Race is not for the swift

29 Jan 2022

Hi Folks,

I am pleased to write you again after weeks of silence, I trust that you are well and in good spirits.

The past couples of weeks have been filled with reflections on what we have done right, those we have done wrong and that which we should do right.

2023 is upon us as Nigerians, in a couple of months we’ll be going into the polls. Already, solidarity and support groups are springing up here and there, albeit in the name of money.

Bars and beer parlors are filled with discussions of who the crown will fit.

Of concern is the ethnic undertones of most of the discussions. At a time when competence and merit should be the bone of contention, we are talking of zoning.

Analysts and speculators are talking, Tinubu will make a good president, Prof. Osibajo will even be better; Prof. Pat Utomi’s also came up, my ladies Okunnu and Ndidi Key are on the radar too.

Nigerians say they want a new crop of leaders from the younger generation, not a bad idea but it has been more of talks along those lines. Not at any time have seen Nigerians throw their weights behind a young candidate.

The race is not for the swift, you will agree with me that it has been more of the swift in the past. Many in the position of power do not deserve to be there, they often get there through godfather support.

We need to start to sensitize ourselves on identifying the best leaders. Antecedents are usually part of the mix. Let your circles of influence understand that merit is the watch word in electing a leader in 2023.

President Muhammadu Buhari should create an enabling environment, going by his mantra of “I am for everybody, I am for nobody”, 2023 should be free fair.

Gone are days we take whatever is thrown at us. Let’s come together and do the right thing.

Remember to make someone smile today through your acts of kindness.

Yours,

Ilupeju B.
