Lagos the Afrobeats City

22 Aug 2018

Greetings from Lagos, the soul of Naija. It gladdens my heart to reach out to you at this time, need I do an intro? For posterity’s sake, I’ll do an intro.

‘Letter from Lagos’ is a weekly digest of some of the most exciting experiences from Lagos, Nigeria. It will engage you, excite you and most likely call you to action. Interestingly, you can share your experiences with me and you could get a mention.  Now that you know, let me go into the heart of the matter.

Remember that sweet girl, the one that was nominated for ‘Most Promising Actress to Watch’ and won at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards? Okay, okay if still don’t remember her, she did a remix of her song ‘For My Matter’ with Patoranking and she has done songs with Davido, Olu Maintain and a host of others. Anyway, she welcomed a set of twins, Alexandria and Alexandre at the early hours of Saturday 11th August, 2018. Emma and the twins are doing very well.

I didn’t want to talk about the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) nomination party since they chose not to send my own special invite but trust Lagosians, from across social media platforms, down to the most open bars in town, everyone was either tweeting, commenting or straight up talking about the folks who attended. When you have Ik Osakioduwa hosting, you can be double sure of the kind of crowd such an event will pull and that is overlooking the fact that it is an Africa Magic event. On the roll call were; Odunlade Adekola ( that fella who has crossed all boundaries in Nigerian Movie industry), Kunle Afolayan (the guy that reenacted Nigeria’s independence story in a the movie  ‘October 1’), Femi Adebayo (Oga Bello’s son), sexy diva, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Hilda Dokubo, Linda Ejiofor and pretty Adesua Etomi (the boys could hardly keep the gist off her simple pink outfit). A handful of Big Brother Naija alumni were present and so many cool people whose names were not mentioned. Wait till September when the winners will be announced at the awards.

Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, brought industry eggheads together at the opening of her emotional one woman show, ‘Naked’. The highly acclaimed stage play had Tony Rapu, ‘Aunty J’ Joke Silva, Kafayat Qadri, Olu Jacobs among others.

NAKED is a unique story that takes the audience on a journey of life experiences both the good and bad of a young woman through love, career and a whole lot.

On a final note, I stopped by at the New Africa Shrine to unwind for the day and I was just in time for the arrival of Afrobeat King, Femi Anikulapo Kuti to a cheering audience after a tour of Europe and America. Someone told me he should be performing again somewhere in France by the end of August. Before then, you can catch me for a drink of palm wine as Femi performs live on Thursday 16, August.

Hope I was able to bring you up to speed with some of the events from the past one week in Lagos, please leave me a comment of key activities with your territory and who knows, I might just bring it on right here. Look out for my letter again next week.

Sincerely,
